How Our Collaboration with Chime Helps Improve DX and Scale React Native at Enterprise Level
Chime is a San Francisco-based financial technology company that makes mobile banking simple and accessible, offering a straightforward alternative to traditional financial services.
When we started collaboration, Chime was early in their adoption journey with React Native. We’re proud to support their work through an ongoing partnership – unlocking new capabilities and assisting with React Native library and architecture migrations. Thanks to our collaboration with Chime, we’ve been able to test, refine, and scale our key React Native libraries in one of the most demanding mobile banking environments in the U.S.
Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC.

Challenges & goals
Key goals of our partnership with Chime include:
- Supporting Chime in adopting the latest versions of React Native libraries and migrating to the New Architecture
- Assisting with the integration of Expo SDKs into Chime’s infrastructure
- Validating our open-source libraries and developer tools in a high-scale, real-world production environment
Expanding React Native Screens for truly enterprise use
Our work with Chime is based on close collaboration. We operate as a technical partner, helping client’s internal teams solve React Native-specific challenges as they build and scale a mobile banking experience for millions of users. Because of the app’s scale and complexity, Chime gives us a real-world environment whose scale and complexity allows us to challenge the open-source libraries we create and maintain.
During our partnership, Chime decided to migrate the legacy navigation library to a new solution. To preserve native-like transitions and platform-specific behaviors, the client teams adopted React Native Screens, shaped and extended through our collaboration. The library enabled Chime to transition without compromising on UX or performance. What began as a tailored solution for specific use cases within the Chime app has since evolved into a widely adopted open-source tool – now used in most React Native apps that rely on react-navigation.
Today, when Chime runs into any edge cases or has innovative feature requests, we continue to develop and evolve the library to meet real-world community needs, ensuring long-term stability and scalability.

Collaborating on Expo SDK integration
The Chime app uses several libraries from the Expo SDK, such as expo-haptics and expo-clipboard, to deliver seamless mobile interactions. With over 2.500+ pull requests, we're a top contributor to Expo, the production React Native framework officially recommended by Meta. Thanks to our teams' deep involvement with both the Expo ecosystem and Chime’s mobile infrastructure, we’ve established a tight feedback loop.
Whenever Chime seeks additional polish or requests a specific feature, we’re able to collaborate directly with our internal Expo team to prioritize and implement enhancements efficiently. The tight feedback loop not only keeps Expo libraries dependable at scale, but also helps deliver stable, high-quality experiences for Chime's members.

Streamlining engaging UI in Chime Plus™ with React Native Reanimated
In early 2025, Chime launched Chime Plus, a new premium feature tier that introduced a major app redesign, delivered within a short timeframe. The redesign focused on elevating the overall user experience with a more polished visual layer and interactive UI components.
In this project, Chime’s team relied on our React Native Reanimated library that enabled Chime to implement smooth, native-feeling animations and transitions across the app. One of the standout UI elements of Chime Plus is an animated header with a gradient, built using Reanimated and fine-tuned in collaboration with our team.
We supported the process by helping ensure the performance met production-level expectations. This shared effort enabled a successful rollout of visually rich animations, without compromising app responsiveness or stability.

Supporting React Native upgrades and migration to the New Architecture
Keeping a large-scale mobile banking app like Chime aligned with the fast-moving React Native ecosystem takes strategic coordination, deep ecosystem knowledge, and hands-on experience with complex architectures.
As React Native core contributors and long-time Expo collaborators, we partner with Chime’s internal teams to manage React Native version upgrades, Expo SDK updates, and transitions between key libraries. We work with Chime to identify potential migration issues early, test across multiple SDK integrations, and ensure full compatibility.
Currently, we’re also collaborating on the migration to the React Native New Architecture – our role includes working with Chime to assess readiness, isolate blockers, and gradually roll out architectural changes in a safe, controlled way.
Our joint efforts and partnership ensures Chime stays current with performance improvements, modern tooling, community best practices, and critical security enhancements to maintain the highest standards of compliance.
